In celebration, Duncan Scott productions is preparing a new edition of the film that is digitally restored and rejuvenated--and in high-definition for the first time.
We the Living: The 80th Anniversary Edition will then enjoy a wide release in theaters and via video-on-demand, making it possible for audiences around the world to discover this inspiring movie and the fundamental values it proclaims so powerfully.
Preparing for this new release has been a massive undertaking. It began when we had a high-definition digital scan made using the master 35mm negatives that had been recovered in Italy in 1968 by Ayn Rand’s associates, Henry and Erika Holzer. This greatly improved the clarity of the film, making it far sharper and more detailed than previous versions.
Then, using state-of-the-art digital software technology, we cleaned up and repaired the entire film, frame by frame, removing scratches, dirt, and other flaws that are common in old movies. Improvements to exposure and contrast were also made, scene by scene.
The result is stunning.
Audiences will finally get to experience this beautiful film much as moviegoers saw it when We the Living premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1942!
UPDATE: We the Living: The 80th Anniversary Edition will open in theaters in New York and Los Angeles in early fall, 2022. Additional cities will be announced soon afterwards. The film will be available on a streaming platform later in the year.
