About The Film
Set in the chaotic aftermath of the Russian revolution, We the Living is the story of a young woman who courageously defies a brutal regime. It is an extraordinary tale of romance and betrayal and, at its core, a fierce and impassioned outcry for the right of each human being to live free.

It was based on the novel by Ayn Rand and was produced in 1942 in Rome, Italy. We the Living stars Alida Valli (as Kira), Rossano Brazzi (as Leo), and Fosco Giachetti (as Andrei).
Valli's luminous portrayal of a sexually independent heroine was both daring and groundbreaking for its time. Viewed as an indictment of fascism, dictator Benito Mussolini ordered the films to be banned and destroyed.
But the film negatives were hidden and many years later the movie was rediscovered and restored under the personal supervision of Rand. It was first released in the USA in 1988.
Black & White. In Italian with English subtitles. Running time 2 hr, 54 min.
